An Unexpected Strategy for Preventing Osteoporosis

Is Taking Vitamin D Early After Type 1 Diabetes Diagnosis a Game Changer?

Preventing Osteoporosis

As we age, our bone mass can deteriorate, leading to osteoporosis. Osteoporosis can be a challenge, since it increases the risk of bone fractures, especially in the hip, spine and wrist. Many nutrients, like calcium, magnesium and vitamins D and K help, but more help is always welcome. Now, more help has been shown to come from an unexpected place.

A new study that included 8,889 people measured their dietary intake of omega-3 essential fatty acids and studied the effect on the risk of osteoporosis.

The results were encouraging. They found that the people who got the most omega-3’s were a significant 29% less likely to have osteoporosis.

Interestingly, people under 60 who got the most omega-3’s had a 49% reduced risk, but there seemed to be no benefit for people over 60, suggesting that it is important to start getting more omega-3’s early.

This new study adds omega-3 fatty acids to the list of natural aids for preventing osteoporosis.
